Fast thinking and action are required to prevent a toilet from overflowing. It isn't difficult, though, if you know how to take care of it.
To begin, immediately and carefully remove the toilet tank cover and lay it aside. Make sure everything is secure, but don't stress about spreading stuff out on towels or anything because you don't have much time!
Then, in the toilet tank, depress the flapper valve. The flapper is the rubber element at the tank's bottom center. Any surplus water will be prevented from entering the bowl and pouring over the edges.
Once you've secured the flapper valve, pull up on the float that triggers the tank fill valve to stop the tank from filling. When the main water supply is turned off, the water level in the bowl should gradually decrease. You should be able to let go of the float and refill the bowl without worrying about it spilling if the water level returns to normal after approximately a minute. Keep an eye on it so you can shut it off if the water level gets too high.
